Dimple Kapadia

Dimple Kapadia, born on 8th June 1957, is a prominent Indian actress who appears mostly in Hindi films. She was introduced into the film industry by Raj Kapoor at the age of 16, where she played the lead role in his romantic film ‘Bobby’ in 1973. In the same year, she got married to Rajesh Khanna, a renowned Indian actor, and took a break from acting. After her separation from Khanna in 1984, Kapadia made a comeback to the film industry. She starred in many films during that period, including the drama ‘Saagar’ in 1985. Both ‘Bobby’ and ‘Saagar’ earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Kapadia established herself as one of the top actresses of Hindi cinema in the 1980s.

Kapadia initially gained fame as a national sex symbol. However, she was determined to avoid being typecast and to expand her range of acting roles. Consequently, she took on more diverse and serious parts in a range of film genres, from mainstream to parallel cinema. She received critical acclaim for her performances in films such as Kaash (1987), Drishti (1990), Lekin… (1990), and Rudaali (1993), for which she was awarded a National Film Award for Best Actress and a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. Kapadia also played supporting roles in Gardish (1993) and Krantiveer (1994), which won her a fourth Filmfare Award.

Dimple Kapadia worked occasionally in the 1990s and 2000s, playing small roles in films like Dil Chahta Hai (2001) and the lead role in Leela’s American production (2002). Some of her later films include leading roles in Hum Kaun Hai? (2004), Pyaar Mein Twist (2005), Phir Kabhi (2008), and Tum Milo Toh Sahi (2010), as well as supporting roles in Being Cyrus (2005), Luck by Chance (2009), Dabangg (2010), Cocktail (2012), and Finding Fanny (2014). Kapadia is the mother of Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna, both of whom were former actresses.
